Moving to Tacoma in Summer? Here's What to Prepare
Summer is prime moving season in the Pacific Northwest due to the long days and schools being on break. While this is a good time for a move, there are still some Tacoma-specific seasonal quirks to keep in mind.
Watch the Weather and Timing
Tacoma summers are mild, but moisture and afternoon thunderstorms are common. It’s crucial to be prepared with tarps or covers for your truck and to pack sensitive items (electronics, documents, textiles) to protect them from humidity.
Be prepared for fewer available moving dates and higher prices due to the late August back-to-school rush. If you’re moving before kids start school, aim for mid to late June or early July.
I-5 traffic gets heavy during commute hours. Coordinate with your movers to avoid 7–9 a.m. and 4–6 p.m. Schedule utility disconnects (Pacific Power and Puget Sound Energy) at least 2–3 weeks in advance.
Pack Smart for the Climate
In order to prevent warping, don’t wrap your furniture too tightly. There needs to be proper air circulation. Use plastic bins instead of cardboard for items sensitive to humidity. For outdoor gear (fishing equipment, patio furniture), do a dry-out check before packing.
Local Logistics
If you’re moving to an older neighborhood, like a historic district, a waterfront area or an apartment complex, look out for tight parking or narrow streets. It’s best to give your moving company a heads up. Reserve elevator time if needed.
